Pretoria, South Africa -- A giraffe was killed in a freak accident on a busy highway in South Africa Thursday that is causing outrage online.

Based on images tweeted out by motorists, two giraffes were being transported in an open-air truck with their necks seen hanging out of the top.

One motorist, Pabi Moloi, posted an image on Twitter just before the incident saying, "Look how low that bridge is and how tall the giraffes are. Who thought this one through? I wish I hadn't seen this."

Moloi also posted images of the giraffes before the incident on Instagram:

In an interview with Mashable, Moloi said she will be haunted by what happened for a long time.

Another motorist posted a picture of the two giraffes after he heard one of them died.

Mashable says the owner of the giraffe confirmed to a South African reporter for The Citizen that the animal died. However, the owner blamed the giraffe saying it craned its neck just before the incident.

A spokesman for the SPCA told NBC News early indications showed the animal died instantly.
