TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Florida legislators say they are returning to the state Capitol this week to adopt a new congressional map.

Legislative leaders have decided to hold a week-long special session starting this Thursday, according to state Sen. Jack Latvala.

The special session was triggered by a ruling last week. A Florida judge ordered legislators to draw up a new map by Aug. 15 after he declared the current districts illegal.

Judge Terry Lewis also stated that once a new map is drawn he will then consider whether to order a special election for later this year.

The decision to hold a special session so close to elections is extraordinary. Some legislators are currently in the middle of campaigning for the Aug. 26 primary. Lawmakers are barred from raising money during special sessions.
