FARMINGTON, Minn. (KARE) - It was a bittersweet goodbye in Farmington on Monday.

Erling Kindem, 89, and Emmett Rychner, 3, gave each other one last hug as neighbors.

On Monday, Emmett moved with his family to a house in the country. In a few weeks, Erling will move into a senior apartment with his wife.

Erling left Emmett with one last gift. It was a silver dollar along with a note that read, "may we be friends forever."

The two began an unlikely friendship last year.

"They kind of bonded over the tomatoes in his garden," said Emmett's mom Ankia, "because Emmett loves tomatoes."

Those seeds planted in a garden have bloomed into they friendship between little Emmett and the a World War II veteran who flew combat missions in Europe.

Watch the original report from our sister station KARE 11 on Erling's and Emmett's deep bond:

For nearly a decade Bryan and Anika Rychner had little interaction with the elderly man next door.
