(CBS NEWS) A company posing as Verizon is telling folks they can get $54 because they overpaid their bill -- but it's a scam!

"I got a voicemail from a phone number that showed up as an official Verizon tech support number," Kellen Barranger who was a target of the scam.

And that's what makes this scam so different. The 1-800-number the call came from is the official Verizon customer care number.

"Hackers have the ability to create spoofed caller ID so you think you're dealing with an official organization," said Adam Levin, co-founder of Identity Theft 911.

The message directed Barranger to a website,, which asked for his Verizon username, password and even credit card information.

"They can create new accounts based on the fact they have sufficient information from you that they can re-create you and can convince other people that they are you," said Levin.

Verizon Wireless says it has shut down the Verizon54 website, but experts warn scammers will just find new ways to make money.

"Never underestimate the creativity or technological expertise of hackers," said Levin.

Barranger never fell for the scam. He runs a blog about cell phones so the voicemail made him suspicious. He contacted Verizon directly and found out it was a fake.

Experts offer this simple advice: if it's too good to be true or strikes you as odd, stay away.
