LAKE CITY, Florida (WTLV) -- The search is on for a gunman after two inmates were shot Saturday at the Columbia Correctional Institution, putting the prison on lockdown, authorities said.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office confirmed the shooting to our sister station WTLV First Coast News.

Deputy Murray Smith, public information officer for the Columbia County Sheriff's Office said at 5:14 p.m., the Columbia County Combined Communication Center received a 911 call from Columbia Correctional Institution (CCI) in reference to two inmates being stabbed.

Smith said deputies went to the prison to help. While en route, the prison updated the 911 Center that the injured inmates appeared to have been shot and not stabbed. When the deputies arrived, they provided assistance to CCI by setting up an ID check point on the road leading into the facility due to it being in lock down.

Smith said additional deputies conducted a check of the surrounding area. Deputies were told by CCI personnel that an incident occurred and the investigation is ongoing, Smith said.

Smith said no suspect information has been released at this time. As of Sunday evening, the prison remained on lockdown.

The investigation continues under the direction of CCI and the Florida Department of Corrections, he said. The Florida Department of Corrections is aware of the shooting.

"Our priority is the safety and security of inmates and staff," department spokesperson Misty Cash told FCN.

The prison has an all-male population of more than 1,400.

Jessica Cary, Director of Communications for the Florida Department of Corrections released the following statement:

"Today two inmates were injured at Columbia Correctional Institution. No staff at the institution were injured and all are safe and accounted for. The Department of Corrections is currently working with its law enforcement partners to investigate this matter."
