ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AP) - A Pinellas County man faces animal cruelty charges after his German shepherd mix was found in such "deplorable" it had to be euthanized.

Deputies were called after the dog named Rocky was found wandering a mobile home complex on Saturday. Authorities say the 17-year-old dog was emaciated and covered in fleas.

The Tampa Bay Times reports deputies traced the dog back to its owner, 38-year-old Jason Aldridge. He told deputies he didn't know the animal was missing.

Authorities say the bag of food Aldridge had been giving the dog was infested with bugs.

Aldridge told deputies he had not taken the dog to a veterinarian because he didn't have money.

Aldridge bailed out of jail on Saturday and it's not known whether he has an attorney.
