St. Petersburg, Florida -- "He was going after my partner and that wasn't going to happen."

Gary Trangus wasn't going to let a street punk get away with anything. He and his partner, Lagrimas, were getting in the car when a man on a bike came up their St. Pete driveway Friday afternoon and grabbed Lagrimas' purse.

"He was thinking he wasn't going to get my purse, so he just poked my head with his gun, but I wasn't going to give him the purse, and I saw Gary coming at him," said victim Lagrimas Porquia.

Gary decided to let the suspect taste a little metal, grabbing a shovel from the car.

"I said, 'this isn't going to happen' and I grabbed a shovel and went after him," said Trangas.

Gary swung the shovel and connected. Metal met mandible, and suddenly the suspect wasn't so tough anymore. Gary had the upper hand, so the suspect raised his gun and fired. Two bullets struck Gary. One went into his chest, the other clean through his wrist, but the bullet fired into his chest met metal too -- a pair of glasses.

"The glasses I have here were in my top pocket. The bullet went through it, and diverted the bullet from my lung," said Trangas.

Gary and Lagrimas went to the hospital to be treated for their injuries, but will be fine. St. Pete Police are looking for the suspect described as a dark-skinned man in his late teen to early 20s, last seen riding a turquoise-colored beach cruiser bike eastbound on 33rd Avenue North wearing a dark flannel shirt over a dark T-shirt.

Anyone who sees the suspect should contact St. Pete Police at 727-893-7780.
