WINTER HAVEN - An 11-month-old child is hospitalized with a skull fracture Friday after a man who had been smoking marijuana got mad at the crying and threw the baby in the air, and it landed on its head. The child is hospitalized in stable condition.
Early Friday, Polk County detectives charged Christopher Finlayson, 24, of 5600 Cypress Gardens Road, Winter Haven, with aggravated child abuse.
The baby was left in Finlayson's care while the mother went to a store Thursday night, the sheriff's office said. The infant was unresponsive when she returned about 7 p.m. and Finlayson told her the baby had hit its head on a play pen. She then she took the child to Winter Haven Hospital, which notified the sheriff's office.
Finlayson told to detectives he had smoked a "blunt and a half" of marijuana on Wednesday, had been up the night before, and that he "lost it," according to the sheriff's office. The baby started crying, Finlayson got frustrated when the child did not stop and he then threw the baby across the room.
According to detectives, Finlayson told the baby, "I'll give you something to cry about," before throwing the infant into the air toward a bed. The child landed on the floor face first.
Finlayson also admitted that on previous occasions he had tried to yell at the baby to "scare" the child into being quiet.
The baby is in stable condition at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, the sheriff's office said, and also suffered two broken wrists and five fractured ribs..
Finlayson is being held in the Polk County Jail and was denied bond.
