St. Petersburg, Florida -- The fact that St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman decided to hire Clearwater Police Chief Anthony Holloway to head up the St. Petersburg Department has some people scratching their head.

The questions include why did Kriseman hire an outside firm, the Mercer Group, to narrow down the applicants to the four best candidates? That search cost cost taxpayers nearly $14,750.

Why did the Kriseman fly in the three out-of-town finalists and put them up at a hotel? Bringing in the candidates cost taxpayers $3,320.

And, why did Kriseman trot the candidates out in front of the city council and to a public forum of meet the candidates and then ignore what the public said?

Instead of choosing one of those candidates -- including Assistant Chief Melanie Bevan -- Kriseman hired someone the public, nor council ever really met or had a chance to interview.

Keep in mind this is a mayor who had a secret conference call with council members before he took office and yet he maintains he will have a transparent administration. Critics say in what Kriseman calls one of his most important decisions, transparency is clearly out the window.
