Clearwater, Florida -- Clearwater Fire Rescue crews worked to free the driver of a vehicle that sideswiped a home during a crash with another car Wednesday afternoon.

The Florida Highway Patrol says 85-year-old Howard Dippel, Jr. was heading west on Lakeview Road approaching Lake Avenue as 82-year-old Annie Spellissy was waiting at a red light in the southbound lane on Lake Avenue. When the light turned green, Spellissy started traveling into the intersection, however, Dippel failed to stop at his red light and hit the front right side of Spellissy's car.

After impact, Dippel's car continued off the roadway and into two private yards. Once in the yards, Dippel's car hit several small trees and came to a rest against an unoccupied and abandoned home, partially on top of a palm tree.

Firefighters had to stabilize the car before they could get Dippel out.

Dippel and Spellissy suffered only minor injuries. Dippel was cited for running a red light.
