Lakeland, Florida -- Polk County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a crash where a 17-year-old girl was hit by a car around 2 p.m. Monday at Peterson Road and Gus Stewart Road in Lakeland.

Deputies say Hailey M. Collier was walking home from school with friends when she was struck by a Honda Civic driven by 16-year-old Roy Khalife. The sheriff's office says Collier may have tried crossing the road immediately after a westbound vehicle passed, which may have blocked her view of Khalife's vehicle.

Collier was reportedly thrown about 25 feet and came to rest on the westbound lane of Peterson Road. She was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

Both Khalife and his passenger were wearing seat belts. The sheriff's office says no criminal charges are currently anticipated.
