The helicopter was helping detectives monitor activity on Siesta Beach

Sarasota, Florida -- During a response to large groups of juveniles at Siesta Beach, Sarasota County Sheriff's Office arrested one of the subjects for shining a green laser light onto a helicopter and into the cockpit.

Just before midnight on Friday, deputies responded to over 500 subjects, mainly juveniles, grouped together on the beach. Deputies saw several small fights occurring in the large group and began to break up the altercations.

Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Aviation Unit helicopter arrived to assist and monitor the activity with the use of the forward looking infrared equipment/camera (FLIR). During this time, one of the subjects in the crowd began to shine a green laser light onto the helicopter and into the cockpit. Deputies operating the helicopter were able to direct deputies on the ground to where the subject was located and once contacted he was placed under arrest.

The subject was charged with one felony count of Misuse of laser lighting devices.
