Tampa, Florida -- More than half a dozen bar and club owners spoke up today at a Tampa city council meeting against an ordinance they say could hurt their businesses in Ybor city.

Under the proposal, larger venues that serve alcohol and are considered "nightclubs" would have to buy a $50 permit each year.

Club owners say it unfairly targets establishments in Ybor city and could impose needless costs and fines. One Ybor City lawyer said the ordinance is designed to deal with problem clubs and club owners which don't exist in Ybor anymore.

That permit could also be revoked if there are violations, like selling alcohol to minors.

For now council is divided on the issue.
