Myakka City, Florida -- By the looks of the 17, shiny, beautiful horses running around at the Whispering Ranch Feed store farm in Myakka City today, you'd never think they once looked deathly ill.

"There wasn't a dry eye here. It was very sad. Heart-wrenching to see" says Beth Shuttleworth.

All were severely underweight, some by 250 pounds with scraggly manes, or no manes at all.

"You can see she's so poor, she can't open her eyes more than halfway" Shuttleworth says, shaking her head while pointing to a photo of a horse from a few months ago.

These horses were rescued after a raid on the Napier's Log Cabin Horse Animal Sanctuary back in February.

Along with the horses, almost 300 other animals were on the Napier property. Dogs, cats, pigs and more, all found living in poor conditions. Roaches covered surfaces.

Today, after years of complaints and months of investigation, the owners of that sanctuary Alan and Sheree Napier were arrested. Each were charged with 15 counts of animal cruelty and Alan Napier with one count of fraud.

"I would like them to understand what they did. To understand what they did was so bad. I hope they never get another animal. I'd like justice to be served."

10 News reached out to the Napier's attorney, who didn't return our calls. As for Alan Napier, all he had to say was "no comment".
