St. Petersburg, Florida -- It took rescue crews nearly an hour to extricate a man who crashed his car into a utility pole near Meadowlawn Middle School Wednesday morning.

St. Pete Fire & Rescue says the crash involving a black SUV occurred in the area of 62nd Ave. and 16th St. NE around 10:50 a.m. When fire rescue crews arrived, they found the SUV was heavily damaged. As soon as crews saw the severity of the driver's injuries, a trauma alert and an extrication unit was called.

The 57-year-old patient was flown to Bayfront Health Center. His condition is not known at this time.
