Sarasota County FCAT average scores higher than state at all grade levels

Sarasota County, Florida -- Sarasota County students scored higher than their peers across the state, on average, in FCAT Writing and third-grade Reading and Math test results released Friday, May 23, by the Florida Department of Education.

Writing tests were administered to students in grades four, eight and 10. In Sarasota County, 9,213 public school students participated in the writing assessment. The group included students with disabilities and English-language learners.

In the district, 3,074 third-grade students took the FCAT Reading and Math tests. The results reported are based on all students tested, including students with disabilities, English-language learners and retained third-grade students.

  • The district's FCAT average Writing results exceeded state averages for each grade tested. In grade four, 64 percent of students scored at proficiency level 3.5 or above on the essay; 11 percentage points higher than the state average 53 percent. In grade eight, 66 percent of students scored 3.5 or above, 10 percentage points higher than the state average of 56 percent. In grade 10, 73 percent of students scored 3.5 or above, 9 percentage points higher than the state average of 64 percent.
  • In Reading and Math, the percentages of students scoring in proficiency levels 3-5 in Sarasota County are ­­14 and 7 percentage points higher than the state, respectively.
