Tampa, Florida -- According to Feeding America, more than 21 million children across the United States participated in reduced priced meal plans at school, and thousands of them are here in the Tampa Bay area.

Metropolitan Ministries is working with several organizations to help drive the number of hungry children down.

When school is out the need for food is up. Marta Gonzales, who has three children, is a working mother and an example of what so many parents deal with during the summer months.

"People think it's only homeless people... but no, it's not only homeless," said Gonzales.

Gonzales is a full-time school aide but has the summers off, which means she doesn't get paid during those months.

"People who work need help, sometimes; we are struggling with trying to help our families," said Gonzales.

Metropolitan Ministries is expecting more than 800 families in need.

More than 50 percent of Hillsborough County students are on a reduced priced meal plan at school. But when school is out, so are the meals.

That's where Metropolitan Ministries comes in. The organization has partnered with Feed the Children and Concord Hospitality to provide more than 800 Tampa Bay families, like the Gonzales, with meals for a week helping ease the financial strain.

"Do I pay the grocery bill? Do I keep the lights on? Do I pay the rent? Those are choices no family with children should have to make," said Gwen Harmon of Metropolitan Ministries.
