Hernando County, Florida -- A Hernando County Sheriff's deputy was injured early Saturday morning after being hit on Cortez Boulevard.
Officials say Deputy James Baker's car was traveling westbound approaching the intersection of U.S. Highway 301 around 4:43 a.m., when it was hit on the driver's side by another car traveling northbound.
Baker was treated at the scene before being flown by medical helicopter to the hospital. As of Monday, Deputy Baker remains in the hospital in fair condition.
Two people who were in the car that crashed into the deputy fled the scene, but were located of deputies a short time later.
The driver, later identified as Chelsey Carmody, was charged with driving with a suspended license and failing to remain at a crash involving injuries.
The crash investigation is being handled by the Florida Highway Patrol.
