The U.S. Coast Guard rescued several crew members from a South Korean cargo ship on Tuesday after its captain reported a food poisoning-like illness.
Two MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crews from the Clearwater station evacuated 19 of the ship's 21 crew members from three miles off of Port Canaveral. The crews had to work in 35 mph winds from Tropical Storm Arthur.
The helicopters made several trips to the 584-foot JS Comet, which had been in contact with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and a Coast Guard flight surgeon, before the evacuations.
The men were taken to a field near Sunrise Diner in Cocoa Beach. They boarded waiting Space Coast Area Transit trolleys and were driven to Cape Canaveral Hospital.
The patients were being evaluated and treated Tuesday evening, according to Health First Vice President of Marketing & Communications Matthew Gerrell. He also said extra personnel were brought in to handle the emergency, which is standard for the hospital.
