Spring Hill, Florida -- A sinkhole that opened over the weekend forced one homeowner to leave their home Monday as neighbors watched a contractor dig up the debris.

Neighbors brought boxes and newspapers to Linda Fisher's house so she could pack her belongings. Fisher has lived in her home off Eldridge Road and Van Allen Way for 18 months, but Hernando County's building department declared the house unsafe.

"The hard part is I thought I was going to live here forever," she said. "We are madly trying to pack and move."

She was not there when it opened up on Saturday.

"All the cracks I see today were not there when I left Saturday morning," Fisher said.

The sinkhole is 40 long by 40 feet wide and 30 feet deep.

A private contractor thinks the six inches of rain from the weekend weighed down on the surface oils and that hydraulically opened the top of the sinkhole. However, Hernando County emergency officials have not determined the exact cause. The sinkhole first opened on Saturday.

A contractor has been hired to remove debris and cap the hole using a flowable fill. A water main in the area has been shut of temporarily, according to the county.

"See how each ledge moves up you can see that all the way into the garage in her home," said Michelle Parisik, Fisher's daughter.

Her daughter and their neighbors couldn't believe the damage.

"You can see the sky from when the garage has fallen forward and is pulling away," said a neighbor dropping off boxes, Christine Stobart. "It's kind of scary."

They have been helping her pack all weekend.

"You don't prepare for this kind of thing. You don't expect it you don't think it's going to happen," said Stobart, as she unloaded more newspapers from her car to help Fisher back.

As they rushed to pack, county workers started to break up the ground. Everyone moving as fast as possible before the rain comes again. The geotechnical work to access the ground will begin on Tuesday.
