St. Petersburg, Florida -- Charles Wood watched the price climb higher and higher while squeezing the gas pump at a Mobil station in St. Petersburg this afternoon.

"This tank holds about 15 gallons," he said. "It's expensive. There's no two ways about it."

A gallon of regular gas at this particular station cost Wood $3.29. But, he could have saved quite a bit of cash had he just waited a few hours.

Around the same time just down the road at the intersection of 34th Street North (U.S. Hwy 19) and 9th Avenue North, Pastor Danny Lewis was trying to shove a cardboard sign into the ground. He was standing in front of an Exxon station where his church has something big planned for Wednesday night.

"It's going to be a great night, a great event and I'm looking forward to meeting other people in St. Pete," he said.

Reliance Church in St. Petersburg offered discount gas to people on Wednesday night.

Lewis recently moved from Georgia to St. Petersburg to help start Reliance Church. They meet at St. Petersburg High School on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. and decided to do something for the community. Reliance is buying down the price of gas by 40 cents at that Exxon station from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday - no strings attached.

"Gas is mighty high. People need it and we want to help them with that need," said Lewis.

It's not unrealistic for a gas station to pump 1,000 gallons of gas or more in an hour. Lewis' church group will pump for 90 minutes and, at 40 cents off per gallon, that check Reliance Church has pledged to write could have a lot of zeros on the back end.

Reliance Church in St. Pete offered savings on gasoline as an outreach on Wednesday.

Despite that financial burden, Lewis says that won't change their minds.

"It's well worth it to us to go do this," he said. "We don't feel like the money is as valuable as what we want to share."
