Polk County, Florida -- The Polk County Sheriff's Traffic Unit is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash this morning that involved a vehicle striking a man on a bicycle.

Polk County Sheriff's Office received a call around 2:17 a.m. on Saturday, August 9, in reference to an adult Hispanic male laying in the roadway on US Hwy 92 in the westbound lanes, at the intersection with Payne Street, in Auburndale. The victim, later identified as 27-year-old Hector Chavez, was deceased and it appears he was riding his bicycle when he was struck by a vehicle, and then potentially struck by other vehicles after the initial impact.

The roadway was shut down for approximately four hours.

Deputies are seeking the public's help in this investigation, to identify the victim and identify the suspect vehicle or vehicles. If you have any information, please call PCSO at 863-298-620
