WASHINGTON (WUSA9) --Styrene foam is strong, reliable and cheap to get your hands on. It's used in everything from household goods, food containers, cups and plates and according to new research it may be more harm than good.
Not only is it bad for the environment but bad for your body as well. A new report from the National Research Council states that the organization agrees with the National Toxicology Program that styrene is "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen," based on sufficient evidence. Carcinogens are agents that cause cancer.
Although the NRC notes that there is "limited but credible" information for carcinogenicity in humans they have seen "sufficient" evidence in animals. However they did notice damage in human DNA cells that came into contact with styrene.
However, polystyrene, which is used in foam cups ,has been deemed safe by the FDA for over 50 years.
