Tampa, Florida -- A teenager is in serious condition at Tampa General Hospital after police say he broke into his uncle's home and was shot by the homeowner.

Tampa Police say around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, the 15-year-old boy cut the power to Melchisedec Williams' house on Chipco Street and broke in through a bedroom window. He then armed himself with a knife from inside the home.

Williams, who is legally blind, was awakened by the crash of the bedroom window. He heard stomping and got his gun. He called out asking if the person was his nephew, but there was no response.

Even though he is legally blind, Williams could make out a shadowy figure and see a flashlight moving in his direction. He feared for his life and fired. After the shooting, the intruder spoke and he recognized the voice as his nephew.

Police say the teen is expected to survive.

The suspect's mother was having trouble controlling the teen, so for the last month he has been living with Williams. The uncle was also experiencing trouble with the teenager until a week ago when the teen took off without notifying him. He had not heard from his nephew until he broke into the home last night.

The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
