Tampa, Florida -- A driver lost control of his car, drove onto a sidewalk and struck a student and then dragged her as she was walking home from school Monday afternoon.
The girl, who is an 11th-grader at the the D.W. Waters Career Center, was hit just before 3 p.m. and dragged under the car across a yard until the vehicle stopped near a chain-link fence near 1209 Osborne Ave., Tampa police said.
Neighbors rushed to the 18-year-old girl, got her out from under the car, and she was taken to Tampa General Hospital. She is in serious condition with severe burns caused by the oil pan that exploded on impact.
People who were nearby then responded to help the student.
"My neighbor right here, she said, Neighbor, Neighbor, she under the car so we pulled the fence up and she rolled out," Emma Singleton said.
Malik A. Majied, 23, of Tampa, is charged with DUI with great bodily injury. Tampa police said he is on probation on felony drug charges.
