Pinellas Park, Florida -- Police are looking for a gunman who changed from a potential renter, to attempted robber, to gunman in a matter of minutes Thursday morning.

It happened around 10:30 a.m. Thursday near Richard L. Sanders Exceptional Education School and Pinellas Park Elementary School.

Both schools were placed on lockdown twice before noon.

Police said the suspect pretended to be talking on his phone about a home that was for rent. While a maintenance man was outside, the suspect then tricked the maintenance man into letting himself into the home with the maintenance man. That is when the suspect aimed a gun at him and demanded money.

"The man did what he needed to do to survive the situation, telling the suspect, 'I'm going to get the money for you. I don't have it on me,'" said Pinellas Park Police Sgt. Adam Geissenberger. "That wasn't good enough for the suspect. The victim then took a leap of faith, turn around, and ran. When he ran, the suspect opened fire."

Two Pinellas Park schools are off lockdown following a nearby shooting on Thursday morning.

The maintenance man was shot more than once in both arms, and other bullets flew close to his head. The shooter fled by hopping over the backyard fence and through neighborhoods.

The maintenance man was taken to Bayfront Medical Center.

The suspect is described as a black male, in his early to mid-20s, about 5'8", and weighing 160 pounds. He has short hair and was wearing dark clothing. The suspect is considered armed and dangerous.
