BOCA RATON, FL (CBS12) -- Florida is one of the most popular states for bicyclists but according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration there's an uptick in the number of fatalities on our roadway.

Those numbers, however, didn't stop the Boca Raton Bicycle Club from getting together for another ride.

Sunday's 25th annual Frank Stark Bike Ride brought together hundreds of bike riders treking 62 milies to raise money for charities and bicyclist advocacy groups which all champion safety.

Many bicyclists CBS 12 spoke to said they've had a brush with death a time or two.

The latest numbers in Palm Beach County show an increase in the number of fatalities.

In the last year of data available from the NHTSA, 49,000 bicyclists were injured, and 677 were killed.

Brett Baronak is in charge of bicyclist and pedestrian safety in the county and he says because of limited funding he can barely give out helmets.

Baronak says drivers and bicyclists need more education if they are going to coexist safely on the road.

According to the Department of Motor Vehicles the top four deadliest metropolitan ares for bike safety are all in Florida.

That means you are twice as likely to get killed riding a bike in Florida than the rest of the country.
