Polk County, Florida -- Polk County has five reported cases of the fever that is being spread through mosquitoes.

According to a spokesman from Florida's Department of Health, chikungunya is a mosquito-borne virus and is not usually deadly. So far there have been 82 cases confirmed in Florida, two of which have been contracted locally.

Chikungunya Fever is an illness caused by the chikungunya virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes.

"To prevent chikungunya, it is vital that Floridians and visitors continue to avoid mosquito bites" said Dr. Jennifer Bencie, DOH-Manatee Administrator.
