WEST PALM BEACH, FL (AP) -- Palm Beach County officials have loosened restrictions on where sex offenders can live.

The county commission unanimously passed a measure Tuesday to reduce the minimum distance sex offenders must live from schools, day-care centers and other places children gather. The 2,500-foot restriction put in place eight years ago has been reduced to 1,000 feet, in line with state law.

The change comes after a convicted sex offender sued the county earlier this year, claiming he was left homeless by the strict residency restrictions.

The Palm Beach Post reports no one spoke at the final public hearing on the rules change, and the measure was passed without comment.
