TALLAHASSEE, Florida (AP) -- Tallahassee Fire Department records show that a Florida State law professor killed earlier this month was found by a neighbor bleeding in his car with the driver's side window "bashed open."

Police released a portion of the emergency call to the fire department Monday that described the first person on the scene after Daniel Markel was shot. He later died in the hospital.

The neighbor reported hearing a loud bang and went over to Markel's residence. He found Markel parked in the garage, bleeding in the driver's seat of his 2008 Honda Accord. The 41-year-old father of two did not respond to the neighbor but was moving. The neighbor saw what appeared to be a white or silver Prius driving away.

Markel died from a gunshot to the head.

Investigators involved with the investigation are asking for anyone who may have seen Mr. Markel in the following areas on Thursday July 17 or Friday July 18, 2014, to please contact the Tallahassee Police Department at the numbers below:

  • The corridor of Interstate 10 (I-10) and Thomasville Road possibly near commercial/retail establishments
  • In the area of Tharpe Street and Mission Road
  • The surrounding area of the FSU Law School
  • In the area of the Congregation Shomrei Torah Home located at 4858 Kerry Forest Parkway

Markel would have been driving a 2008 black Honda accord with a Florida license plate of 534YBM.
