JACKSONVILLE, FL — Four young girls have lost their parents in a wreck, the third time the children's grandparents lost a child in an accident.
Ashley Goetzinger, 29, and Jason Sanders, 31, both of Jacksonville, were thrown from their motorcycle after it and a van driven by James Alligood, 50, of Atlantic Beach, Fla., attempted to make a left turn in front of them, according to a Florida Highway Patrol report. They were not wearing helmets and died at the scene late Thursday.
"We're not supposed to bury our children. Our children are supposed to bury us," said Thomas Goetzinger of Boonsboro, Md. He is Ashley Goetzinger's father, and his sons Bret and Matthew died in car crashes in 2001 and 2009.
The couple met when Sanders was 16 and Ashley Goetzinger was 14, her father said Monday.
Two people died in a car crash involving a possible DUI driver on the Westside.
"I would have to say it was love at first sight because they've been together this long," Thomas Goetzinger said. "Jason was a good young man, a very good young man and they were a very loving couple."
The couple had four daughters, ages 8, 9, 11, and 13. Family members say they had returned to Jacksonville two months ago after living near Ashley Goetzinger's family in Maryland for 12 years.
State troopers are still investigating the accident and awaiting toxicology reports because of a suspicion that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, according to the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department.
