SPRING HILL, Florida— A 44-year-old man is recovering from serious injuries following a hit and run crash Saturday night in Spring Hill. State Troopers say Dave Smith was hit just before 9:00 p.m. on Landover Blvd. north of Thornberry Drive in Spring Hill.

"Dave is the funniest guy you'll ever meet," said girlfriend Danielle Gibbons. "When you're around Dave, you'll always have a smile on your face."

Friends and family say Smith is now fighting for his life.

"He landed right there… that's where his head was," said Gibbons pointing down at the pavement. "[The car was going] 60 miles an hour. That's what the state trooper told us."

Gibbons says she and her boyfriend were walking in the grass, carrying a flashlight, when a dark colored sedan suddenly veered off the roadway.

"We were holding hands and it just ripped him away from me," said Gibbons.

The crash happened in Susann Minall's front yard.

"It should have never happened. I have goose bumps," said Minall. "That poor man. It's horrendous."

She said you would never know the speed limit in front of her home is actually 35 miles per hour.

"People are flying down here. Fifty, 60 miles an hour, and this is during the day," she said.

Worse yet, witnesses say the sole street light illuminating this stretch of residential roadway wasn't working at the time of the crash.

"You can't see anything. It's dark," said Minall.

Regardless of the cause, Dave'e girlfriend will never forget watching as a car hit her boyfriend, stopped momentarily, then proceeded to drive away.

"It didn't stop, it wasn't coming back, it wasn't turning around," said Gibbons. "I mean, his life is on the line right now and this person should not get away with what they just did."

Doctors are slowing trying to bring Dave out of a medially induced coma where he is recovering in the hospital with a fractured skull and shattered eye socket. His family remains hopeful someone will come forward with information about the driver who left the scene.

The Florida Highway Patrol is searching for a late model, dark colored car with front end damage on the right side included a broken headlight. Anyone with information can contact FHP at 813-631-4020.
