Tampa- Need a ride? There's an app for that.

It's not available here in the Tampa Bay area just yet, but we became one step closer Friday. The House committee passed a bill that would lower restrictions on digital transportation services in Hillsborough County, and other special districts.

Some cab drivers are worried that if the bill passes, it could mean their jobs.

"I've been driving a cab for 40 years," says Michael Bonasante, a cab driver for the past 43 years.

He worries, now, a new bill could drive him out of town.

"Town cars have to charge a minimum of $40 dollars. That protects the taxi cabs from being over run," says Bonasante.

House Bill 1389 would prevent Hillsborough County from requiring companies to have a minimum wait time, a minimum fare, or permits issued to operate, steering the way for apps like Uber, to start their engines here in Tampa.

Bonasante, however, worries the door will be closed on his career if this bill passes.

"If Uber's allowed to come in here, it'd destroy cabs here. It's just no good," says Bonasante.

Some people say Uber would be safer and more efficient for people to get around.

"I think it's a great app," says Kyle Cok.
