The girls were walking to school when they were hit by an SUV.
Plant City, Florida -- Police say a teacher driving an SUV hit two sisters Friday morning -- a kindergartner and a 3rd grader.
School officials say the girls were supposed to be at their usual bus stop at the corner of Davis and Baker, but the accident happened a half mile away in a slightly different direction. The school is very close to the bus stop and the girls were walking to it. School officials say the driver of the SUV is a teacher, from the same school as the victims.
"Bump. Loud bump. I thought two cars collided," says Terrie Daniel who lives near the scene of the accident.
She adds, "When I heard it was two kids I was immediately sick and called my husband and said pray for these families."
Another witness, Tina Bomberek, says she also ran to help, "I was calm but in my mind, oh my God, I was freaking out."
Witnesses say the driver was visibly distraught. "She was hysterical it was terrible - started singing 'Jesus loves me - this i know. The bible tells me so.'"
"I can not imagine being the person who hit them. If you heard the impact you have to know they were hurt pretty bad," said Daniel.
People in the girls' neighborhood say there's a lesson to learn here. "I know the school is just right there but still I wouldn't let them walk."
"If you miss the bus - go home - get with a parent and let them know. "
No charges are pending against the driver and police continue to look into the circumstances which lead up to this accident.
