Dismissal was delayed by about an hour while law enforcement searched for a weapon.
Tampa, Florida -- Wharton High School was placed on lock down for most of the day Thursday after a report of a student with a gun on the New Tampa campus.
Hillsborough Sheriff's deputies say shortly after the start of the school day, a student came forward and reported to the school resource deputy that he had seen another male student in possession of a handgun.
The school was placed on full lock down and the student in question was located. The student was uncooperative, but detectives came to the conclusion they believed the information given by the witness was credible. So, the search for the weapon continued and additional information led deputies to the outlying areas of the school's athletic fields as well as a nearby wooded area.
Because of the search, the school's scheduled 3 p.m. dismissal was delayed until just after 4 p.m.
Detectives are conducting follow-up interviews and as of now no weapon has been located. Charges are pending.
