Holiday, Florida -- A man who was shot earlier this year by a doctor at a Pasco County chiropractor's office was arrested after he was released from the hospital on Friday. He then died hours after bonding out of jail.
Jaime Velez was shot multiple times on February 17 at the West Coast Spine and Injury Center in Holiday. Investigators say Velez, 34, got into a confrontation with Dr. Lenny Linardos, and Linardos ultimately shot Velez. Both men were reportedly armed and investigators consider the shooting a case of self defense.
Velez had been in the hospital since the shooting until Friday, April 4. Upon his release, deputies took him into custody and charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and felon in possession of a firearm.
Velez bonded out that afternoon and went to his mother's home in Hillsborough County. He became ill that evening and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead just after midnight Saturday.
The Pasco Sheriff's Office says the medical examiner determined his cause of death was related to the injuries he suffered in the shooting.
