Tampa, Florida — After seven hours of reconstructive surgery, Shaina Foreman finally saw her face for the first time last night after Friday's attack, her mother Siobahn said.

At a news conference Monday, Shaina's parents Sam Woolfson and Siobahn Foreman walked out of the hospital hand-in-hand.

"Shaina seems to be doing better and better by the hour, said her dad Sam. "You know she's such a strong little girl."

They've been keeping their hopes up even as doctors at TGH say it's one of the worst dog bites -- they've ever seen.

"It certainly ranks in the top 10 of dog bites," said TGH/USF Health ocular surgeon Charles Slonim.

Shaina spent seven hours this weekend in the operating room with Slonim and six other doctors reconstructing her face.

"She said, 'Mommy, I just saw my face,' " Siobahn said. "And I said 'OK, that's OK baby, you're still just as beautiful as ever,' and she just said 'I know,' and continued playing."

Shaina embodies the incredible resilience of a child, but Dr. Slonim said the case is perplexing.

"What's really unusual -- it's a Chocolate Lab," he said. Slonim says out of the hundreds of dog bites he's treated, the most come from Rottweilers, German Shepherds, and Doberman Pinschers.

On Friday, Shaina Foreman was bitten by this 90-pound Chocolate Lab in Pasco County.

Animal control is still in possession of the dog and they will hold it for 10 days as they test it for rabies. Pasco County Public Information Officer Doug Tobin said it's "more than likely" the dog will be put down because of its violent behavior.

"It's my friend's dog, but to be completely honest I want it put down," Siobahn said. "I don't feel like he should be able to be adopted out."
