St. Petersburg, FL - A man is dead after he apparently lost control of his car, drove through a bus stop and crashed into the front porch of a St. Petersburg house.

The crash happened shortly after 4 a.m. Tuesday in the 3300 block of 49th Street North.

St. Petersburg Police say the car was reported to have been speeding with its headlights turned off just before it ran off the road. They say it also hit a tree before slamming into the porch, and broke into several pieces

The driver, 48-year-old Tony Harshbarger, was ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

49th Street North was closed to all traffic between 36th Avenue North and 33rd Avenue North during the accident cleanup. The street reopened shortly after 9 a.m.

Police are waiting for a toxicology report to determine if Harshbarger had been under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
