ST. PETE BEACH, Florida (AP) - The quick actions of a Georgia man likely saved the life of a 66-year-old New York man who became tired while swimming about 100 yards off shore of St. Pete Beach.

The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office says 29-year-old James DiFrancesco heard cries for help Tuesday evening and saw Terry Strecker go under water several times.

DiFrancesco, of Smyrna, Georgia, asked his wife to call 911 while he went to help the man. DiFrancesco assisted Strecker to shore.

The St. Pete Beach Fire Department treated Strecker and kept him under observation. Strecker is from Kenmore, New York.

Deputies say the stretch of beach was isolated and that had DiFrancesco not heard Strecker's cries, he could have drowned.
