Lakeland, Florida -- Two cats that were previously believed to have been killed by a knife or other sharp object in Lakeland were actually killed by a predatory animal, according to police.

A veterinary forensic pathologist examined the carcasses, but doesn't know what type of animal killed the cats. DNA samples were taken to identify it; those results will be back in three to four weeks.

Investigators originally did not believe an animal caused the injuries, because the cut incisions appeared deliberate and precise.
