Port Richey, Florida- A car goes up in flames Friday afternoon after crashing into a tree in a Port Richey neighborhood.
Four teenagers were inside. Three of them made it out alive.
One of the teens' families says although there is a long road of recovery ahead, they owe their daughter's life to the heroic efforts of complete strangers.
According to Florida Highway Patrol, the accident happened after the driver of the car lost control of his van on a curve of Lake Forest Circle near Lake Forest Drive.
For Michael Florio, he said his family has been through it all over the weekend because their daughter Jamie suffered severe burns after the car she was in, crashed into a tree and burst into flames.
"She has second degree burns on her hands," said Florio. "I can't believe it happened. The fire. I can't wrap my head around it."
Michael said Jamie made it out of the fiery car, along with Ridgewood High classmates Michael Morgan and Megan Kahn, thanks to a couple of heroes.
"If you have kids you, you know how thankful I am," said Florio.
Jennifer Paige and her father Jim are the heroes Jamie's dad was referring to.
"I was trying to get kids out and the flames were shooting," described Paige.
But the fire was too strong to save the driver of the car, 16-year-old Kevin Monaco.
"I am so thankful for the women. But I am torn because my daughter's safe, but that was her best friend. My daughter's safe but Kevin is not," said Florio.
Michael said Jamie is in the burn unit at Tampa General with severe burns up and down her body
"She's strong. She's fighting," he said, fighting to forget the crash that claimed the life of her best friend.
"It's crazy you know. They're just kids. Don't blame anybody. It's nobody's fault," says Florio.
Next to the charred ground is a memorial for Kevin. As for Jamie, she is expected to undergo her first surgery Tuesday. Michael Morgan is in serious condition at Bayonet Medical Center.
