Sarasota, Florida -- A passionate debate over where to put a homeless shelter in Sarasota continues.
A joint meeting between Sarasota City and Sarasota County commissioners today lasted more than four hours and ended without a decision on a site.
City and county leaders have decided to continue looking for another site or building for a "come as you are" shelter. Except this time county commissioners have decided to have city commissioners agree on a site then meet again to vote on the city's selection in September.
It was standing-room only at the Sarasota County Administration building. Commissioners heard from dozens of people for and against one of the three proposed sites for a shelter. While all except one person agreed a shelter is needed no one wanted it in their neighborhood.
City and county staff looked at more than 80 sites during the nine-month process before narrowing their selection.
The city and county are going to keep looking for a location for a homeless shelter.
