Tampa, Florida -- A man who Tampa police said was driving recklessly along Central Avenue later died from severe hypoglycemia while in custody.
Police say Arthur Green, 63, was swerving across both lanes of Central Avenue Wednesday afternoon. He allegedly drove onto a sidewalk and ran a stop sign. When an officer arrived, Green swerved into oncoming traffic and hit two cars. No one was injured in those accidents.
Green reportedly became combative with the officer, who called for backup. A second officer arrived and helped handcuff Green. Tampa police say the officers became concerned that Green was suffering a diabetic incident when he stopped breathing.
The officers uncuffed him and immediately started CPR. Tampa Fire Rescue successfully revived Green, who was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he later died.
According to initial medical reports, Green suffered from severe hypoglycemia. He also had a history of diabetic incidents.
