KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WZZM) - A Kalamazoo Public Safety Officer is being hailed as a hero for saving a woman from choking at a traffic stop over the weekend.

Officer Jason Gates saw the vehicle run a red light in the 4100 block of S. Burdick Saturday morning at about 11:30am. When he approached the vehicle, he found the driver was choking on food and struggling to breath. Gates pulled the woman out of the van and gave her three abdominal thrusts which dislodged the obstruction.

Dashcam video captures a police officer helping a driver who appears to be choking. The officer pulled the woman over for running a red light.

The driver expressed her gratitude that the officers are trained as police, fire, and medical first responders.

Kalamazoo Public Safety released the above video of the incident.
