NEW YORK – New York City police say it was a Yonkers man who viciously attacked a woman and her children after posing as a cab driver Sunday.

The New York Police Department announced Friday morning that they had arrested Pedro Vargas, 48, of 41 Central Park Ave., and charged him with two counts of felony assault, one misdemeanor count of assault, and three counts of endangering the welfare of a minor.

Police said the 26-year-old woman and her three children, ages 1, 3 and 5, were picked up in Manhattan by a man who said he was a cab driver. The woman asked to be driven to Queens and once there, police said, the driver pulled in back of a hotel and tried to sexually assault the woman in front of her children. As the woman tried to get out of the car, police said, the driver elbowed her 5-year-old in the head and "forcibly removed the 3-year-old from the auto."

He then fled.

Police said the children were taken to Elmhurst Hospital.

The attack was captured by surveillance video.

Police did not say how they determined Vargas was the alleged attacker.
