TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- State lawmakers approve a bill making it a separate offense to hurt or kill a woman causing harm to an unborn child.
Remee Jo Lee of Tampa sat in the hearing for the vote. Her boyfriend was accused of tricking her into taking pills that caused her to have a miscarriage.
He was sentenced to 14 years in prison on drug tampering charges, but not for hurting the fetus.
This bill makes it illegal and a separate crime to harm an unborn child.
"I don't want any more woman to lose their children or their lives. I hope that this will stop domestic violence against women and the unborn," Lee said.
The bill passed with a vote of 25 to 14. It now heads to the governor's desk.
