TALLAHASSEE, Florida -- You see it in interviews and in political ads -- Florida's leading gubernatorial candidates current Governor Rick Scott and former Governor Charlie Crist bash each other.

They also take their fight to Twitter.

"A lot of candidates jump onto twitter and just start tweeting everything they can possibly think of," said Ryan Cohn, vice president of social and digital operations for Sachs Media Group.

Will utilizing social media actually have an impact on voters, especially young people? Candidates getting strong support on Twitter could help.

"A tweet that comes specifically from one of the gubernatorial candidates isn't going to be as effective as if it's retweeted or endorsed by someone's friend or family member," Cohn said.

That's the case for students like Jeffrey Bonany. He doesn't follow candidates, but thinks Twitter would be useful to hear their message.

"I'm on it basically like all day," Bonany said. "There's a lot of important news that I miss out on so I think if I started to see that on Twitter that would be a good thing."

There are more than 645 million people on Twitter. A search for tweets of Florida campaigns showed a lot of response on the social media site.

"I think it'd be a very good way to get out to my generation and younger people," Bonany added.

The candidates are also using other types of social media to help out, like Facebook.
