Plant City, Florida -- A retired Hillsborough County Sheriff's colonel is Plant City's new police chief.
Ed Duncan spent 34 years with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's office before retiring in 2012.
About 80 people applied for the position left vacant after former Police Chief Steve Singletary was fired in January for misconduct involving an extra-marital affair.
The applicants were carefully and thoughtfully screened to weigh the backgrounds of the applicants against the needs of the City. As a result of that screening process, six highly-qualified finalists were identified for further consideration.
On Wednesday, June 18, the finalists participated in a comprehensive two-part screening exercise, which included a detailed interview conducted by a panel comprised of both City staff and members of the community.
Based upon the results of the entire screening process, including the finalists' interviews, Assistant City Manager Bill McDaniel recommended Ed Duncan as Plant City's next chief of police. Having participated in the interview process, Interim City Manager David Sollenberger "whole-heartedly concurred" with McDaniel's recommendation.
Duncan was subsequently offered the position of chief of police for the City of Plant City and he accepted.
Duncan starts work in Plant City on July 7.
