Sarasota, Florida -- Sarasota voters may find it easier and quicker to vote at the polls this election season because the county is replacing its large poll books with mini iPads.

Each of the county's 312 precincts will use a mini iPad to read the bar code on the back of the voter's driver's license, and then all their information will appear. The voter will sign on the screen and then the machine can verify the signature and record they have voted.

Sarasota's Supervisor of Elections Kathy Dent says the electronic poll books save time when recording a voter's voting history and helps prevent fraud.

"We have to scan every signature every poll book at all the polling places in early voting it takes staff two weeks," Dent said. "This way you get automatic voter history. It also prevents fraud. You can't vote in one place and go somewhere and try and vote. It's already been recorded as having voted."

The new poll books cost about $800 each for a total of nearly $250,000.
