Roads flooded and power outages in Tampa due to heavy rain.

Tampa, Florida -- Tampa Police Officers have been responding to calls throughout the city of flooded vehicles.

Earlier these roads were flooded with vehicles stuck in the water. The water is receding in some places although drivers should approach these areas with caution:

  • Nebraska Ave./Hanna Ave.
  • Fowler Avenue/15th Street
  • Bougainvillea Ave./30th Street
  • Florida Ave./Linebaugh Ave.
  • 22nd Street/109th Ave.multiple vehicles
  • 56th Street and Fowler Avenue

The University of South Florida also posted on-campus locations that are impacted by flooding:

  • Holly Drive lot 3 to Laurel
  • Alumni west of Maple to lot 29
  • Lot 5B
  • Lot 36
  • Lot 22 middle road
  • Banyan at Fletcher Ave
  • Willow Drive from Maple to Collins Garage
  • East side of lot 12
  • OPM lot
  • Lot 11

Tampa Police also advise if you can't see the road, don't drive through it.

Sandbags are currently available at all Hillsborough County Service Units until 5 p.m. on May 2

  • West Service Unit - 9805 Sheldon Road
  • South Service Unit - 8718 Old Big Bend Road
  • East Service Unit - 4702 Sydney Road

Sandbag materials will be available for residents to make their own sandbags. Each citizen must sign their name and provide their home address acknowledging the receipt of 25 sandbags or less.

Other tips for driving in heavy rain/floods

  • Drive slow!
  • If you find yourself hydroplaning remain calm, ease your foot off the gas and steer and brake lightly. DO NOT brake hard because you may lock your brakes.
  • Keep your tires inflated and maintain good tire tread. Don't hold off in replacing worn tires, they are not good in heavy rain weather.
